GIANT KILLER #3 (Total Victory)

Giant Killer (3)

‘He picked up five smooth stones.’ 1 Samuel 17:40

In David’s day they fought ‘by representation’. That means that one man fought for the nation as a whole, and the country of the losing warrior became subservient to the country of the conquering warrior. So David versus Goliath was really Israel against the Philistines! ‘No pressure, David!’

Most of us know David’s victory over the giant as a story of faith, a slingshot and a single stone. But David hadn’t picked up one stone, but ‘five smooth stones’. It wasn’t lack of faith; Goliath had four brothers, and David knew he may need extra stones to defeat them too. Giant-killers realise that their giants never stand alone; behind the giants lie causes. Somewhere behind all obvious issues (or giants), such as eating disorders, addiction, self-harm and anger, are its supportive, driving ‘brothers’ – pain, guilt, loss, shame and control. With God’s help we can conquer both the giant and the things that stand behind it. We may need to talk to someone about the issues behind our giant – there is no shame in doing that.

Giant-killers have learned not to allow their fears to overwhelm their faith. The Bible says that ‘God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind’ (2 Timothy 1:7). Fear feeds on the failures of the past. We can’t allow yesterday’s failure to overwhelm today’s faith.

List your failings and fears. Write next to them: ‘These won’t overwhelm my faith’. You are destined to be a giant-killer, through Jesus.
